'Ellingtonia'
Ellingtonia is a stunning nine-piece band devoted to playing the music of Duke Ellington, delivering the authentic sound of the 1930s with a collection of classic songs and swing tunes.
Ellingtonia want to celebrate Duke Ellington's extraordinary music of the nineteen-twenties, thirties and forties: wonderful tunes that are by turns touching, intriguing, delightful ... and toe-tapping!
But our show isn't just a trip down memory lane. The music has to come alive for a 21st century audience.
What's the 'Ellingtonia' approach? We use our own unique musical arrangements that are tailor-made for the band. We follow the style of the originals and the result is pretty authentic.
The line up (2 saxes, 2 brass and 4 rhythm and vocals) is one Ellington often used and produces a really big sound.
Elaine Norsworthy writes:
'Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, Take the A Train…just three of the titles that are indelibly associated with Duke Ellington. But behind the mask of popular entertainer and suave bandleader, was a man regarded by some as one of the most significant figures in twentieth century music.
His contribution was certainly unique as he forged his own compositional techniques, writing to the strengths and abilities of the distinguished musicians he attracted to his band. Over a fifty year career he composed hundreds of pieces – from perfect miniatures to extended suites, for venues ranging from night clubs and dance halls to theatres and cathedrals. His style evolved continuously, yet was always unmistakably Ellingtonian.
There has been no eclipse of his reputation since his death in 1974, and today his work is kept alive not just through his many recordings but by the interest of musicians around the world in reinterpreting his distinctive contribution to music.'
